Workshop: succession
management
The task of encouraging older staff to retire or not retire is a difficult one. There are well-tested strategies and approaches, however, that enable managers and staff to move beyond the impasse. The purpose of the Succession Management workshop is to help HR managers and others in leadership roles learn about these tools, experiment with using them and understand which may be appropriate in which circumstances.
The exact design of the series depends on the needs and interests of the participants. The three basic phases, however, can be clearly defined and explained:
INTRODUCTORY SESSION(S):
-
clarification of concerns - the problems faced, what's been tried - what's worked, what hasn't and what individual responses have been encountered
-
array of 'tools': turning 'problem talk' into 'possibility talk' using Appreciative Inquiry; reframing; and the art of conducting difficult conversations, with some preliminary exercises to practise using these tools
-
understanding the world of retirement that the staff will be moving into (including superannuation, and theimplications of continuing part-time) but also helping schools to see the potential that does await well supported retirees.
PROGRESS SESSION(S):
-
participants report back about their attempts to apply the various tools in their organisation. The group will explore what worked and didn't and why, and whether there are there things also to be learned from this about issues internal and external to the organisation
-
further tools and practice linked to issues that arisereferences and resources.
LOOKING BACK AND LOOKING FORWARD: FINAL SESSION
-
what's been learned? A review of approaches, tools and techniques - what's worked and why? Understanding time frames and stages for transition and change
-
negotiating ongoing support.
Everything said in the course of the workshop will be treated in the strictest confidence.
The normal pattern is to conduct four sessions of about two hours each with a follow-up interview some weeks later with each participant. Further consultations may be negotiated by request.
