Re-vision workshop: Finding new ways of being an educator
This workshop is for school educators - teachers, principals, all school personnel - who have reached the stage (and age) when they would like to stop full time work in demanding jobs but would like to continue to use skills hard won over the years and to maintain their interest in and commitment to young people. The workshop is designed to help people explore alternative work routines, to find new ways of being an educator.
There is a lot of hand-wringing about 'ageing Australia' as if somehow being granted extra decades of health and activity is some awful problem instead of the gift it is. Schools seem to be a special target of this concern with the constant harping that the average age of teachers is mid-40s. With average life expectancy now nudging 80, mid-40s is barely half-way there!
It is, however, true that full-time work in a school can be, and usually is, exhausting. People reach a point where they would like to maintain their commitment but in a less pressured, less intense way.
This is new ground for all of us, but we have found there is wide interest in exploring new ways for educators to work in schools. No one wants to lose the wisdom and insight that comes with experience. The ideal is to have schools filled with new teachers and old ones - indeed, with the whole age spectrum.
This 4-hour workshop goes over two sessions. We provide a range of examples of different ways of working in schools but we also have devised a set of exercises to help you invent and imagine brand new ones. Then we test which are realistic here now, later, never and explore practical ways to embed new practices.
We work with small groups so that people can take advantage of the insight and experience of others. We have a reputation, which we are very proud of, for conducting workshops that are lively as well as helpful and informative.
The fee for the workshop is $150 (including GST).
