Re-vision workshop: Should I Consider Consulting?
This workshop takes you 'behind the scenes' of the world of consulting by solo practitioners and small firms. It is designed to help you decide whether consulting would be a good way to extend the 'market' for your expertise either in addition to or instead of your academic role.
Consulting can extremely rewarding both intellectually and financially but there are fascinating traps and pitfalls along the way. The Revision team has managed to meet most of them in the course of the seven years we have been operating AAAJ Consulting Group, and successfully worked our way around and through them. We have also been privileged to work with a range of other consultants on projects, local and national. We have studied the somewhat limited literature on consulting and sponsored a seminar about consulting with an invited group of professional consultants and clients..
The workshop will give you a comprehensive insight into working as a consultant. Topics covered include:
- getting started: finding the right clients, the right clients finding you
- building a viable relationship between consultant and client: independence and limits
- financial matters: setting fee structures, insurance, etc
- keeping the time required in consulting under control
- the difference between satisfying consultancies and less successful ones.
The workshop is based on imaginative exercises and case studies that allow participants to explore the possibilities and constraints in terms of their particular consulting interests. Our approach to workshops like this is to make them lively and enjoyable as well as helpful and informative.
Outcomes include:
- a better understanding of whether consulting in your area makes sense for you - either in addition to your current work or as a replacement for it
- practical steps to take in setting up a consultancy practice
- guiding principles in working as a consultant
The workshop will be held over three 2-hour sessions. The cost for the workshop is $175 (including GST) for the three sessions and includes an individual follow-up interview.
